Mount Holyoke College has an immediate opening for a Grounds Supervisor.  The primary responsibilities include planning, organizing and directing the daily work assignments of 12 grounds workers; efficiently, economically and safely managing grounds maintenance and horticultural tasks in accordance with the seasonal and College calendars; training and giving technical assistance to employees; maintaining computer records and files supporting grounds work activity; and assisting with the budget process and purchasing and maintaining of supplies, tools, and equipment.

 

Primary functions of this position are: supervising and assisting in maintaining the grounds; supervising the maintenance of the athletic fields; overseeing in-house site work projects; overseeing landscape project work; supervising the equipment mechanic; administering and maintain the tree collection on Campus; and overseeing the turf management and snow removal programs.

 

Qualified candidates must have: substantial experience in managing a work group; a minimum of five years of horticultural, grounds, or landscaping experience; a Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience in horticulture, environmental studies, biology or related field; a valid driver’s license; the ability to obtain a MA pesticide license; the ability to lift 50 pound objects; the ability to obtain a hoisting license; and the ability to work in inclement weather.  Qualified candidates must be able to communicate and interact effectively with a broad spectrum of people.

 

This position is very much a ‘working supervisor’ position.  The successful candidate will be: spending the majority of their time ‘in the field’ rather than with administrative tasks; will be involved with the work of snow removal; and will be available for planned overtime on weekends, as well as for – what are typically weather related – call in events.
