The Library, Information, and Technology Services (LITS) Division at Mount Holyoke College seeks an enthusiastic, creative, collegial, and service-oriented individual for the position of Access Services Evening Associate.  Reporting to the Evening/Weekend Supervisor, this individual performs a wide variety of library public service duties, providing exceptional customer service with a particular focus on billing.  This is a full time position averaging 37 ½ hours per week.  The normal work schedule is Tuesday-Saturday 1:30 pm-10:00 pm.  During the non-academic schedule, such as breaks, the hours would shift to a day schedule.  During finals when the library is open 24/7, this position may be required to work extended hours.  Overtime opportunities are available.

 

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Works the circulation desk approximately 20 hours per week.
  • Provides outstanding customer service in person and/or remotely.
  • Checks library materials in and out, registers new patrons, places holds on items, runs reports using the library system software (Aleph).
  • Provides information to patrons regarding library procedures and the use of equipment such as copy machines, card vending machines, and scanners/printers.
  • Responsible for all functions related to patrons’ library bills and fines, including processing bills from the online library system, for lost, damaged, recalled materials, transmitting bills to the College’s Financial Services department and the Five College libraries, and responding to patrons’ billing questions.
  • Oversees  student workers during the evening/weekend hours at the Circulation desk, and a student billing assistant; assists with training and evaluation of student workers.
  • Maintains shelving carts and stacks, searches stacks for missing books, and pages materials from stacks.
  • Maintains a high level of quality customer service standards responding to questions and problems. Actively works with colleagues in LITS to create a welcoming and user-centered environment in which a diverse population of student, faculty, and staff can thrive.
  • Serves as a member of the Access Services team and works collaboratively to plan and achieve LITS Division goals and priorities, participates in College and Five College committees, and engages in other professional activities related to the duties of the position.
  • Ensures compliance with professional and technology standards, license and regulatory requirements, and MHC standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Develops strong working, collaborative partnerships within LITS, with the College community, Five Colleges, and others to proactively identify, recommend, facilitate, and implement appropriate and effective policies, services, resources, support, and procedures that improve the ability of the College community to accomplish its teaching, learning, research, and administrative goals.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications/Skills:

  • Two years of experience working in a customer-service role in a user-focused organization; experience in an academic setting preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Library experience and use of library technologies (e.g. an integrated library system) preferred.
  • Evidence of supervisory potential is essential.
  • Basic knowledge of accounting principles, with advanced Excel skills.  
  • Excellent oral and written communication, organization, and problem-solving skills is essential, as well as the ability to convey technical information to a non-technical audience.
  • Evidence of successful prior experience in a position requiring excellent interpersonal and customer service skills, tactfulness, empathy, and resilience to overcome obstacles and provide creative solutions.
  • Flexibility to accept, manage and incorporate change and the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously and effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability both to work as a team member and to work independently in the weekend/evening environment when professional guidance is not available.   
  • Record of progressively-responsible experience related to duties and responsibilities of the position.
  • Creativity, with a passion for supporting a collaborative and customer service-oriented work environment. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse group of faculty, students, administrators, staff, and others.
  • Ability to maintain a professional and tactful approach in all interactions, ensuring confidentiality and an individual’s right to privacy regarding appropriate information.
  • Ability to travel as needed to participate in consortia and professional meetings and events.

The physical demands of the position include:

  1. Ability to work with computer screens and printed materials.
  2. Ability to effectively communicate via the telephone, email, and in person.
  3. Ability to independently lift up to 25 lbs frequently and up to 50 lbs occasionally.
  4. Ability to work in the stacks, which includes bending, twisting, squatting, and crawling.

The Evening Associate is part of the Access Services Team which provides circulation, reserves, stacks management, library & Five College billing, acquisitions, and cataloging services for LITS.  Access Services, Discovery Services, Digital Assets and Preservation, and Archives and Special Collections together comprise the Discovery and Access (DnA) group whose focus is on facilitating discovery of and access to library collections -- print, electronic, and archival -- that support the College.

DnA, along with the Research and Instructional Support group, the Technology Infrastructure and Systems Support group, and the Campus Technology and Media Support group together comprise the Library, Information, and Technology Services Division at Mount Holyoke College.
