Mount Holyoke College has an opening for a Communications Manager in its Division of Student Life. This position is a full time, year round position and reports to the Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students.
Division of Student Life:
The Division of Student Life at Mount Holyoke College seeks to provide a vibrant co-curricular experience for all Mount Holyoke students. To achieve this, the division partners with parents and families, faculty, staff, administrators, alumni, and other community partners. The division is committed to a student-centered approach that stewards good use of resources, provides room for learning and excellent service, and nurtures, supports, and celebrates MHC’s diverse student community. Plan, develop, implement, and monitor engaging, innovative, and interactive marketing communications and branding for the Division of Student Life. With a 2,500+ student community, both on- and off-campus, as the primary audience and other audiences including parents and families, staff, faculty, alumni, community partners, etc. Strategize innovative solutions for communicating with students as well as branding the Division and offices within it. Research, create, and implement well-branded social, digital, and print initiatives and marketing efforts. Consult and educate Student Life staff on latest technology trends and solutions. Help shape policies, procedures, and best practices regarding social media and technology. Utilize social media platforms and online communities to keep a pulse on student life, including critical response. As the Communications Manager, this staff member will work in collaboration with Mount Holyoke’s central Communications and Marketing Office as well as other campus communicators.
● COMMUNICATIONS STRATEGY: Oversee and provide strategic direction to the Division of Student Life communications strategy, including developing and monitoring performance standards and metrics.
○ Assist in the development and implementation of division-wide marketing, branding, and editorial goals and objectives in collaboration with the Vice President and divisional leadership team.
○ Provide guidance and assistance to unit directors and/or their designated staff regarding marketing/communication issues, to ensure a unified and appropriate message.
○ Create or edit promotional and informational materials — advertisements, brochures, handbooks, fliers, web pages, newsletters, etc. — for distribution to internal and external audiences.
○ Plan, write, design, and coordinate newsletters and other internal and external publications announcing Student Life services and promoting resources.
○ Lead creative direction, design strategy, and brand development — both written and aesthetic — for the Division of Student Life and related projects and initiatives.
○ Work with the Office of Communications and Marketing to ensure division strategy is in line with central strategies and goals.
● ONLINE AND WEB CONTENT: Curate, create, and publish a strategic and engaging web presence for the Division of Student Life.
○ Work with divisional offices to explain and promote programs and services through varied and dynamic multimedia content.
○ Develop formal (written and/or verbal) responses for significant community events and programs sponsored by the Division, including digital and print formats.
○ Oversee editorial and graphic content on division web pages. Review division web content for timeliness and accuracy.
○ Lead content creation, and serve as the internal consultant for divisional leaders and offices to develop social media solutions to student engagement issues. Make essential changes as needed.
○ Engage and interact with Student Life audiences; including analyzing metrics and creating regular reports to facilitate well-informed social media strategies.
○ Serve as point person in monitoring and coordinating Student Life policy and practices related to trends in online communities (i.e., Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, etc.) and other related web-based issues. Update the division’s social media resource documents.
○ Serve as a division-wide resource on web-based technology and social media, provide training to staff as necessary.
○ Monitor on a daily basis MHC, local, state, national and industry-based news as it relates to the Division of Student Life, Mount Holyoke College, Higher Ed, and technology trends. Provide access to current information to unit managers and develop recommendations.
● COLLABORATION: Act as a liaison on behalf of the Division of Student Life with the Office of Marketing and Communications, campus communicators, and other College departments regarding the development and distribution of written and electronic publications and materials.
● Other duties and special projects as developed and assigned.
Education Experience: Bachelor's degree. Experience with digital and print marketing communications, writing technical documents, Gen-Y, website maintenance, social media and online technology tools.
Required Experience: 1-3 years of relevant, increasingly responsible experience including research, writing, and/or marketing, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communications skills. Expert knowledge of Microsoft Office and presentation software (PowerPoint, Keynote, Prezi). Basic knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite applications. Strong organizational and planning abilities. Exceptional knowledge of technology trends and best practices for communicating to a Gen-Y audience. Compassion and commitment to diversity, equity and inclusivity.
