Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Mount Holyoke College is presently renovating 8,000 square feet to expand our maker capabilities and to better integrate these capabilities into our academic mission.  We are searching for the Technical Lead and Design Mentor who will run the day-to-day activities of the Makerspace, in collaboration with the Makerspace Coordinator, and help to foster an inclusive climate and collaborative learning environment.  The Technical Lead will report to the Faculty Director and will supervise the student workers.

The technical lead must be able to quickly develop working knowledge in a range of fabrication skills.   A primary component of the job will be to mentor highly varied interdisciplinary projects, which requires flexibility and broad knowledge of how to make a wide range of products using many different materials.    They should be able to troubleshoot equipment and perform straightforward repairs.  They will be responsible for developing and enforcing safety protocols for the equipment and procedures used in the space.   Experience setting up and maintaining a workshop, studio, and/or laboratory space is expected. Initially, they will be the primary person attending to the details of resourcing and organizing the new space for the January 2019 opening, developing training protocols, and will continue to expand or shift the capabilities of the space over time.  We anticipate a start date in November.

Preferred Skills

  • CAD, CAM and 3D design software
  • Rapid Prototyping (e.g. Laser cutter, 3D printer)
  • Metal and wood working
  • Digital and analog electronics
  • Fabrics and textiles

The responsibilities of the Technical Lead and Design Mentor during the academic year include:

  • Train, assist, and supervise students, faculty, and staff on the technical design of projects and use of equipment
  • Teach or co-teach one project based course each semester, or supervise a collection of independent study students
  • Support coursework and workshops run through the makerspace
  • Supervise student workers
  • Perform administrative and maintenance tasks (budget management, reporting, interfacing with faculty affiliates and others in the space, etc.)
  • Perform and oversee maintenance and repairs

In the summer months, responsibilities may also include teaching or supporting a course and performing outreach to local communities.


Advanced degree (Master’s or Ph.D. preferred), or comparable work experience, with demonstrated abilities in relevant technical areas, along with experience setting up and maintaining a workshop, studio, or laboratory space.  The successful applicant should have experience working with a range of skill levels and diverse backgrounds.  The ideal candidate will have demonstrated excellence in mentoring a wide range of technical projects one-on-one and in a classroom setting.
