Position: Primary Care Clinician: Advanced Practice Clinician (NP/PA)

Supervisor: Physician Medical Director, CHS 

Position Description: As a member of the College Health Services staff, the primary care clinician/NP provides direct primary care services to Mount Holyoke College students within the NP’s scope of practice. The NP also participates in CHS programs and public health initiatives that foster health & wellbeing of our students. In all professional matters, the NP maintains a commitment to excellence, collaboration, and supports the mission and philosophy of College Health Services, the Division of Student Life, and Mount Holyoke College as well promote multiculturalism and inclusivity for all. This is a full -time academic year (9) nine month position, which will begin in August 2020.

Essential Functions

Support MHC student success through the delivery of high quality, comprehensive, evidence-based, cost-effective primary care, in collaboration with supervising physician (medical director of CHS) and within designated scope of practice.

  • Medical management of those seeking primary care services at student health clinic

    • Screening and preventive services

    • Comprehensive assessment of acute illnesses, injuries, and undifferentiated symptom presentations, including cost-effective diagnostic testing

    • Primary care management of chronic health conditions, including mental health

    • Provision of high quality, evidence-based treatments, patient education, and as needed consultations/referrals to specialty clinicians

    • Maintain proper, professional, and timely medical documentation

    • Adhere to all ethical and legal professional standards, most especially confidentiality

  • Urgent care/after hours care

    • Cover weekend clinical hours as assigned during academic year

    • Share in on-call services for weekends & after hours, offering direct consultation & support for triage nursing

    • Clinical consultation and collaboration

    • Consultative support for nursing and laboratory staff within CHS, as needed during routine workday and for special projects

    • Collaboration with other healthcare team members within  CHS and MHC (nutrition, physical therapy; counseling, psychiatry, athletic trainers) 

    • Coordinate services with “home” health care team

    • Third party consultation (ie families, MHC colleagues) for issues related to individual students

Non-clinical activities

  • Participation working groups &/or projects (ie education & outreach, quality improvement, diversity, IT)
  • Professional development, participation on college/divisional/departmental committees

  • Clinical teaching, as requested and supported by supervisor

  • Maintain professional certifications and licensure 

Minimal Qualifications

NP

Masters of Science in Nursing 

Completion of an NP training program from an accredited school

PA 

Bachelor degree and completion of accredited PA program

Satisfactory completion of National Commission on Certification of Physicians Assistant Exam

Massachusetts state advanced practice nursing licensure or Physician Assistant licensure

Minimum of 3 years of clinical practice required, preferably in primary care specialty

CPR certification

DEA certification, or eligibility

Knowledge of the developmental issues of adolescents/young adults; experience working with college population desirable.

Full spectrum primary care skills including mental health, ambulatory basic orthopedics, GYN care, and common office procedures.

Computer skills sufficient to chart in electronic health record and facility with basic email, word processing.

Solid and respectful communication skills, both verbal and written.

Demonstrated commitment to working with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
