The Office of Communications and Marketing serves as the official voice of Mount Holyoke College to regional, state, national, and international media. The office also serves as the marketing and branding arm, elevating the College’s reputation and advancing the brand’s presence in the marketplace. The Office provides communication support to the entire Mount Holyoke campus while also being responsible for the oversight and management of the College’s digital presence, presidential communications, internal communications to faculty and staff, external communications to alumnae, parents, prospective students, prospective employees, and major publications. The Office provides direction and leadership to various communications professionals across the campus while advising on communications policy with senior officers of the College.
The Director of Marketing and Communications Strategy is an experienced communications professional who will be part of a strategic, results-oriented team. The Director will be responsible for planning and executing outstanding strategic communications and marketing programs that elevate and promote the College while advancing Mount Holyoke’s brand image. The Director serves as the day-to-day operations lead for the Office, coordinating work-flow and directing resources. Reporting directly to the Vice President for Communications and Marketing, the Director will collaborate with the Office of Advancement and the Office of Admission in the development of strategic marketing programs that reflect and promote the Mount Holyoke mission, values, and beliefs.
The Director of Marketing and Communications Strategy is responsible for leading strategic marketing and communications at the campus level. Major responsibilities will include formulating strategies in conjunction with the Vice President of Communications and Marketing, partnering with the three other department directors (Web, Creative, and Media Relations) in directing the efforts of the marketing and communications staff, implementing marketing and communications programs, supporting the communications needs of all campus academic and administrative divisions, and implementing the Mount Holyoke brand both internally and externally.
The Director will oversee financial budgets, recruitment and evaluation of department staff while also advising on the selection of communication and marketing personnel in other divisions of the College.
The Director will supervise a team of writers, copy-editors, social media specialists, and project managers. It is expected that this position will also lead departmental and interdepartmental meetings.
REQUIRED: Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in marketing, communication, new media, or a related field, plus 7 years of post-secondary education experience with demonstrated excellence in communication, public relations, social media, web design, and/or marketing. The successful candidate should also possess the following
- Significant strategic planning experience; Understanding of brand development and management, vendor management, and web editing, and graphic design. Advanced knowledge of social media.
- Experience in managing and developing a diverse staff of marketing and communications professionals
- Excellent writing skills and the ability to use language effectively.
- Demonstrated experience planning and managing budgets and other departmental resources.
- The ability to manage multiple client relationships and assignments across the entire institution.
- The ability to internalize the College’s institutional priorities and to apply those priorities to “the work”.
- Experience in strategic marketing as it applies to higher education, specifically advancement and enrollment related communications.
- Advanced knowledge, skill, and technical proficiency in using word processing, database, page layout, and website content management software, including Adobe, Google, and Microsoft Office products. Must understand emerging media channels and their relevance to target audiences.
- Excellent writing and speaking skills; Must be able to follow-up and follow through with attention to detail; Possess a good work ethic, be committed to campus goals, represent the university well, and have a sense of community; Highly effective collaborative and interpersonal skills; Must be able to interact effectively with internal and external audiences, including faculty, staff, and students. Ability to clearly articulate the value of a women’s liberal arts education.
Master's degree. Experience in higher education administration.
