Mount Holyoke College has openings for Laboratory Instructors (2) in the Department of Biological Sciences.   The successful candidates will be part of a team responsible for teaching laboratories in our large core courses.  This is 9-month, 37.5 hour/week position.

Position 1: Molecular Genetics and Cell Biology, and Developmental Biology Position 2: Ecology and Evolution

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • The primary duty of each lab instructor will be to teach lab sections in the fall semester in either Bio 230: Molecular Genetics and Cell Biology OR Bio 223: Ecology
  • In the spring semester teach either Bio 200: How Organisms Develop OR Bio 226: Evolution.
  • Both positions involve teaching small 12-14-student laboratory and discussion sections, organizing lab materials, grading, office hours, and attending lectures.


  • Bachelor’s degree with a major in the biological sciences. 
  • Teaching experience is strongly desired and a Master’s degree is a plus.
  • A strong candidate will be a clear, accessible teacher and enthusiastic role model in the laboratory. 
  • Excellent writing, organizational, and planning skills
  • Strong background in the sciences and the ability to reach a population of students that is diverse in every way. 
  • The ideal candidate should be able to take initiative and work independently in addition to working well in teams of other lab instructors and faculty members.
  • We are looking for breadth in biology in past coursework, teaching experience, and any research.
  • The applicants for the Ecology and Evolution position should be comfortable with quantitative concepts, familiar with Excel and some basic statistics.
