Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts seeks an innovative recruitment professional to serve as Dean of Admission. The Dean of Admission is responsible for the execution of recruitment and enrollment strategy, providing leadership for the recruitment and selection of prospective students. As a senior member of the enrollment division, and reporting directly to the Vice President for Enrollment Management, the Dean will build upon Mount Holyoke’s strong position to grow the College’s reputation and reach in domestic and international markets and to deepen our engagement with the admission and college counseling communities.
Mount Holyoke’s Division of Enrollment Management works to attract motivated, engaged students to a community committed to individual and collective growth and achievement. The Mount Holyoke admission office recruits, admits, and enrolls students at the first-year and transfer levels, as well as through the College’s renowned Frances Perkins Program which is open to and designed for women 25 years and older and parenting students who have experienced an interruption in their education, now seeking the intellectual challenge of completing their 4-year degree at a top liberal arts institution. Mount Holyoke’s recruiting program relies on relationships with high school counselors, community colleges, community based organizations, and recruiting materials and communications that convey to prospective students the College’s commitment to excellent academics, community, leadership development, and preparation for a successful career.
The division, now under the leadership of Vice President for Enrollment Management Robin Randall, has realized great gains in the past two years. The class of 2022 is the largest class in college history as the result of a significant uptick in yield. Building on this success, the College made great strides in improving selectivity, with an overall admit rate for the class of 2023 of 37.5%, and regular decision admit rate of 35.3%. The College’s commitment to diversity and inclusion is evidenced by enrollment of domestic students of color at 25% of the enrolled class, and international students at 27% of the class. Fourteen percent of the class of 2023 identify as first-generation college students, and 17% are federal Pell Grant recipients. In 2014 Mount Holyoke adopted a trans-inclusive admission policy, and the College embraces its identity as a women’s college that is gender diverse. The College accepts applications from female, trans and non-binary students.
The Dean of Admission will be a critical partner in leading the implementation of Mount Holyoke’s strategic enrollment initiatives, as outlined in the Strategic Plan for 2021. With the Vice President for Enrollment Management, the Dean will work to utilize current research, data analytics and predictive modeling to identify marketing and recruitment opportunities. The Dean will plan for the deployment of recruitment personnel, oversee and evaluate the admission selection process, engage new partnership programs that advance Mount Holyoke’s mission, and build upon the College’s loyal and enthusiastic alumnae volunteer program in order to advance the reach and reputation of the College. The Dean will be a highly visible member of the College and industry communities and as such will be a spokesperson both on-campus and externally. In partnership with colleagues in the division of marketing and communications, the enrollment division will continue to refine brand messaging and develop content that engages prospective students through the use of multi-modal media channels (web, social media, print). The Dean will serve on the marketing and communications enrollment team.
Mount Holyoke’s enrollment division includes the office of undergraduate admission, the Frances Perkins program, and the office of student financial services. The division partners with faculty and staff across campus to ensure a virtual feedback loop on student success that helps to inform enrollment priorities. The new Dean will be a collaborative leader with a demonstrated commitment to staff development, diversity and inclusion, and community engagement.
In partnership and under the direction of the Vice President for Enrollment Management, the Dean of Admission will be responsible for:
- Planning, implementing and evaluating the recruitment plan; identifying benchmarks and performance goals.
- Communicating the College’s mission to serve a broadly diverse and academically ambitious community and aligning recruitment programs, services and marketing to attract a growing pool of applicants.
- Expand/advance the College’s reputation within the higher education community through active engagement in professional association work.
- Leadership and development of recruitment and admission staff to ensure administrative and professional excellence; commitment to staff learning and growth.
- Supervision of Associate Deans/Admission Directors.
- Assessment of resource use (personnel, budget, collateral, programs) to identify and recommend redeployment of resources or new investment.
- Partnering with student financial services leadership to align enrollment practices, programs and operational excellence across the division.
- Oversight of admission recruitment plan, including programs, travel, events, decision/selection, communications, volunteer programs, operations and student employment.
- Oversight of the recruitment, program/event and operations budget; evaluate and propose changes and new investment as part of the annual budget process.
- With the Vice President for Enrollment Management and the Director of Student Financial Services, evaluate strategies for enrollment success including the projected results of econometric and predictive modeling.
- Partner with the Director of Athletics and departmental staff liaisons to support athletic recruitment and achievement of athletic recruitment goals.
- Represent Mount Holyoke at conferences, professional associations, national meetings; willingness to lead sessions and forums is desired.
- Recruitment and alumnae engagement travel to selected domestic and international markets; estimated travel is 30% of position and will vary seasonally.
- Seven to ten years progressively responsible experience in higher education recruitment and admission at a highly selective college or university.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion, and experience working with gender diverse populations.
- Successful growth of prospect and applicant pools stemming from a clearly defined and implemented recruitment strategy.
- Attuned to current and emerging trends in the field of enrollment management and in higher education.
- Demonstrated success in recruitment and yield program development, planning and execution.
- Appreciation and understanding of difference and context as it relates to applicant experiences and opportunities.
- Demonstrated success in staff leadership and mentoring.
- Open to critical feedback and new ideas; willing to rethink established methods.
- Experience in teambuilding and leading teams through change.
- A willing and generous collaborator with a team perspective; able to work and motivate others under pressure.
- Exceptional organizational, interpersonal, communication, and management skills.
- Appreciation for the value of a liberal arts education and the role of women’s colleges; commitment to affordability and access.
- Excellence in public speaking; experience with a wide range of audiences.
- Technologically proficient, including experience with CRM technology (Technolutions/Slate preferred), advanced fluency with all standard office productivity tools.
A bachelor’s degree is required and an advanced degree is strongly preferred.
