Reporting to the Manager of Media Services, the Classroom Technology Specialist  is responsible for providing hands-on, in-person or remote classroom technology support including audiovisual, desktop support, integrations and related AV services for classrooms, technology-enabled meeting spaces, and other campus environments.   As a functional member of the Media Services team, the Classroom Technology Specialist delivers audiovisual services in support of in-person, asynchronous or virtual campus events and delivers equipment maintenance, consultation, loan and installation services. 

 Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support classroom technology including smart podiums, computers and audiovisual technology, with an emphasis on the successful integration of various educational technologies such as lecture capture, video conferencing, wireless screen sharing, accessibility hardware/software. Acts as a first responder to classroom technology emergency calls.
  • Establish and maintain classroom computer deployments, ensuring the interoperability and usability of classroom systems, related A/V technology, and mobile devices. Provide training or documentation to support the effective use of classroom technology to enable teaching and learning goals.
  • Collaborate with team members to plan, pilot, engineer, install and support a variety of classroom, video conferencing and audiovisual technology across campus, including both standardized and emerging technologies. Conduct routine maintenance and repair of AV systems.
  • Deliver media and classroom technology services to the community including but not limited to: walk-in customer support, equipment loan (circulation and booking), and consultations.   Track requests in approved systems, maintain accuracy of inventory, file paperwork and perform other office functions as needed.
  • Contributes to a continuous process of assessment to ensure Media Services' success in advancing the College’s evolving goals in light of pedagogical, information, and technology changes. Assists the Manager of Media Services in researching, planning, and implementing the best AV solutions for Mount Holyoke.
  • Support campus TVs and related technologies, including those used for digital signage, residential student use, or other purposes.  Implement and maintain hardware, software or required integrations.
  • Serves as a member of the Media Services team and works collaboratively to plan and achieve LITS Division goals and priorities. Acts as a liaison between Media Services (MS), Community Technical Support (CTS), and Research and Instructional Support (RIS) on classroom technology integration issues. 
  • Ensures compliance with professional and technology standards, license and regulatory requirements, and MHC standards, policies, and procedures. 
  • Maintains a high level of quality customer service standards responding to questions and problems. Actively works with colleagues in LITS to create a welcoming and user-centered environment in which a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff can thrive.
  • Develops strong working, collaborative partnerships within LITS, with the College community, Five Colleges, and others to proactively identify, recommend, facilitate, and implement appropriate and effective policies, services, resources, support, and procedures that improve the ability of the College community to accomplish its teaching, learning, research, and administrative goals.

Additional Responsibilities:

  •  Assists Media Services team in providing audiovisual, videography  and video conferencing support services for campus events (virtual or in-person) and on-site support for event spaces.
  • Assists with supervising student staff at the service desk, in the field, and during campus events.
  • Assists with maintenance of various administrative systems, including upkeep of inventory and equipment circulation systems, task tracking and system documentation.
  • Occasional evening or weekend work may be required.  In some circumstances, it may be important to assist during adverse weather and emergency situations to ensure essential services and service points are covered. 
  • Participates in College and Five College committees, and engages in other professional activities related to the duties of the position. 
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications/Skills:

Requires deep and broad skill sets covering audio-visual equipment and related technology, computer hardware and related operating systems, networking fundamentals, information security best practices as well as event and classroom support best practices.

 

Education needed:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a technology, media or communications-related field or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience.  

Required Experience, Skills or Certifications:

  • Minimum of five years experience providing computer technical support.
  • Minimum of five years experience working with professional audiovisual systems support.
  • Audiovisual, video or computer system hardware assembly and installation experience required.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, analyze and solve technical problems
  • Excellent oral and written communication, organization, and problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Creativity, with a passion for supporting a collaborative work environment. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse group of faculty, students, administrators, staff, and others. 
  • Maintain a professional and tactful approach in all interactions, ensuring confidentiality and an individual’s right to privacy regarding appropriate information.
  • Flexibility to accept, manage and incorporate change and the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously and effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to travel as needed to participate in consortia and professional meetings and events.
  • Enthusiastic service orientation with sensitivity to the needs of users at all skill levels; the ability to convey technical information to a non-technical audience is essential.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • CTS certification by AVIXA
  • Familiarity with PC/Mac software installation, MS Office software and first level technical support skills.
  • Knowledge of networking fundamentals
  • Familiar with Extron switching, control and programming

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Visual ability to see video, read computer screens and printed materials;
  • Frequently stand/walk, sit, perform desk-based computer tasks, use a telephone, and grasp lightly/fine manipulation. Walking: Moving about on foot or climbing stairs to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another. Bending, Squatting or Crawling: Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet. 
  • Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position.  Climbing: Ability to work on ladders and scaffolding during the installation or repair process safely.
  • Frequently twist/bend/stoop/squat, reach/work above shoulders, grasp forcefully, writing by hand, sort/file paperwork, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up 40 pounds frequently and up to 75 pounds occasionally.
  • Operate transport vehicles, operate foot and/or hand controls
